About

Welcome to multibootpi.com!

The aim of this website is to provide you with multi-boot solutions for your Raspberry Pi and eradicating the need to use more than one memory card for your desired operating systems. The added benefit of this method is that each system is enclosed in its own unique environment with only it’s own file system and layout to worry about, so will run rock solid stable. It opens the doors to running 2 systems alongside each other that otherwise could not co-exist.

Whether it be a games / media centre / desktop or ‘other’ setup accross a dual-boot, triple-boot (or beyond!) – here you will find the resources needed along with guides on how to create your own unique builds. And all for free. πŸ™‚

All the best, Steve.

  1. Hello dear “santa”
I have tried your previous version of this absolutly marvelous thing. And I did it this weekend so it might not even be a thing to ask anymore. (will try this brand new setup when I get home from work)
The thing I wonder is…how to you boot back to Retropie/Emustation from OSCM/Kodi?
In Retro/Emu you have an icon to get into OSCM/Kodi, but not the other way around. Were do I find the option inside OSMC/Kodi to reboot into Retro/Emu?

Best regards Jonas, a swedish fan πŸ™‚

    1. Tried to download the RetroPie 3.6 & OSMC 2016.02-3 but it says that the zip is broken.
Tried twice to dl, but both times it failed πŸ™

    2. Hi Jonas.

The script you need to boot back into the RetroPie partition should already be set up and you should find it under the ‘Games’ menu on the KODI home screen. You will need to select ‘Launch RetroPie’ from within this menu and you should be good to go!

As for the download links – I am getting reports of high traffic from my web host so maybe that is affecting your download. I will upload again to a different site and offer some alternative links so if you are still having trouble then they should sort you out.

Any issues just let me know.

      All the best.
      Steve

  2. Hello Steve.
Thanks for your reply. I will check your suggestion when I get home. AFAIK I dont have a ‘Games’ menu in Kodi, but that might only be due to me not actually activated it πŸ™‚
Fingers crossed that you find alternetiv hosts, the report of high traffic is a proof of that your builds are very popular πŸ™‚

I amazed with the research you made to make this particular post
    extraordinary. Wonderful job!

  11. Hi Steve. Love the site….lots of great work you are doing here.
I recently purchased a pi3. I started out installing OSMC, however, with the latest update (April) have had crashing (sad face appears) when running skins other than the default OSMC skin. After coming across your site I have decided I would like to run a dual boot consisting of retropie/Kodi. Which build do you recommend for this as being the most stable and user friendly. I hope to have a build that will boot directly to Kodi with the option to run retropie from there. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
    Mike

    1. Thanks Mike! Well, I personally opt for OpenELEC. I’ve been using it for years now without issues and I like the file structure (good for custom scripts) and stability. I haven’t used OSMC much but people seem to like it. I have no issues with OpenELEC though so no reason to switch!

Hope this helps – any questions along the way let me know.

      All the best.
      Steve

      1. After installing Kodi/Retropie dual boot image on my Pi, the standard username and password for the pi (pi, raspberry), don’t work. Atfer putting the SD card in my Windows PC I cannot find or alter the CMDLINE.TXT file to reset the password. Any suggestions?

  12. Steve, your project is wonderful! I follow you since the birth of this. I’m spending all my time in making a portable console with Retropie and insert a MediaCenter in it and going with an hoping Kickstarter funding. What about you if I use your Image in my console? We can speak in private for this!

  13. Are you looking at publishing a walk through on how you’ve achieved this? As valuable as your builds are, I’d like to explore rolling my own.

  14. Hi Steve! This setup is amazing and exactly what I want/need. I would like to know if you plan releasing an updated image any time soon? As Retropie is now 3.7, Kodi is 16.1 Jarvis and Raspbian has been updated quite a lot since your last release. I would absolutely love to use this build but due to certain circumstances I need the updated versions of these OS’es..

Hope you can some time soon! P.s. a tutorial with links to your scripts on how to implement this to our own setups would be AMAZING!

    1. Hi,
He have already made some post of a tutorial about links to his scripts as well as created addons of them. Look under POST “how to add scripts and Triple/dual boots addons.

      Hope that helps.

  15. I been a long time user of your builds and scripts. Also your theme called SS. Do you have an updated theme I can use with v3.7? I love the simple theme with no metadata.

    Thank you

    Luis

  16. Just need to say thanks for taking your time & money to host your builds on your own site. You easily could have said sorry guys, and not hosted or continued your builds. It’s much appreciated. It’s made everything so much easier, Pi can be pretty unfriendly to newer users (like myself with nothing but windows background). You made it simple. Thank You!

  17. Hey Steve,
Thanks for your great work. I recently installed your triple boot for OpenELEC, RetroPie & Raspbian and it is just perfect!
Next thing to do is look into ways of cooling my raspberry pi or to understand if it is actually necessary.

Thanks again, I will continue to visit your website for future setups, guides, etc.
You have helped the raspberry pi community immensely, thanks a lot bro!

    Cheers,
    KhalMinos

  18. How do I backup and make a gold Copy of the Dual Boot. I like to tweak things etc and i always tend to break stuff πŸ™ , so i would like to make updates then when i know it works, save it and then go with next thing i want to tweak and experiment with

BTW the dual boot is awesome.:) Better than my Original RetroPie with just Kodi installed on it.

    1. Just a FYI, updated openlec to the latest and latest kodi(jarvis) for kodi and retropie to latest, everythng working smoothly so far.

      Tim

  19. Hi, I am trying to use your kodi script to boot into retropie, problem is i use berryboot and not noobs and as such it isnt working. is there any advice you can give me to get it working in berryboot?

    regards.

    1. I too am trying to use Berry boot so as to run off a hard drive, but can not get the scripts he provides from http://www.multibootpi.com/addon to work. I know it’s because the scripts are looking on the sd card for a noobs build and not the hard drive with berry boot. I am horrible at programming.

Steve? any chance you could give us some pointers or ideas?

  20. Hi Steve,
Your dual boot of OSMC and Rasplex is great but is it possible to change OSMC to OpenELEC so that it dual boots with OpenELEC and Rasplex instead. I haven’t had much luck with OSMC in the past and am more familiar with OpenELEC. Thanks.

  21. Steve,
Currently RetroPie is on v4 and Rasplex is on v1.6.1 . Would it be advised to install and update each OS or should I wait for another release?

I would also like a tutorial for building my own MultiBootPi RetroPie/Rasplex/SomethingElse image. If you could provide some resources that would be greatly appreciated.

  22. I have been searching for your build download for the OSMC/Retropie. I cannot find the download. I keep getting errors and pages not found. Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

    1. Hi @Joseph,
Steve is not really a Developer.
This is just his personal Compilation that he have so kindly decided to share with everyone. He also tries to accommodate request if posible. Take Raspbian and Rasplex for example, Those was request the he made possible but it was not easy for him and its takes time.
If you was those other OS, you will be best suited to use the regular Noobs etc compilations that is already out there by default.
      Hope you understand.

@Steve keep up the great work

  23. I want a use kodi but with vpn for Netflix but no addons is there a way to add vpn without the addon because I wanted to use Private Internet Access but it only shows pia but it say missing file to make it run and the only one I have seen work from YouTube is ipvanish but for it to do what I want is no good is there a person can create the Private Internet Access file for kodi to be used a vpn.

  24. Hey Steve,

How’s going?, I’m looking for your donation link, please let me know where it is?..

You did what I wanted to do, but wasn’t able to do. So I would be pleased to be able to support you with anything that I can.

    Thank you very much,
    Jr Ritzer.

    1. Hi.

I have been asked a number of times for a donation link now so I have finally succumbed and added one – it is on the main page. Thanks for your support! πŸ™‚

      Cheers.
      Steve

    1. Hi.

I have never even attempted Attract Mode yet myself, however I do want to give it a try, so it is certainly on my to-do list! I will try and get round to it asap.

      Cheers.
      Steve

  25. Hello,

I am totally blown away by your triple boot build. It installed flawlessly (via USB Option). I was just wondering how I was to be going about to have a screen rotation (usually rotate_display=2) for all the systems, since I seem not to be able to get it to work.

Cheers and thanks for your efforts

    1. Hi.

Thanks! πŸ™‚ To get screen rotation working in all OS’s you will need to edit the individual config.txt file for all OS’s. So when inside the RetroPie or Raspbian partition type this:

      sudo nano /boot/config.txt

That will edit the config.txt file for RetroPie or Raspbian (you will ned to do it for both OS’s seperately). Now you will need to do the same for KODI but I would need to know what version of KODI you have installed as I think the mountpoint for the boot partition may differ per build? For example the OpenELEC file is /flash/config.txt BUT the /flash/ directory is mounted as read-only by default, so you would need to remount it with read/write permissions before you can save any changes to the config.txt file. This is what you would need to type into the terminal for OpenELEC:

      mount -o remount,rw /flash/
      nano /flash/config.txt

OSMC mount point for the boot partition is /boot/ if I recall correctly (not sure if it is read only or not), but I don’t know what the boot partition mount point is for LibreELEC off the top of my head and I do not currently have LibreELEC installed to check right now. Let me know what version of KODI you are running and I will try and help out.

      Cheers.
      Steve

  26. hi i will be installing soon and i was wondering about update can osm be updated as usual trought its own interface ? raspbian or pixel too?

    thanks

  27. Hello,
First time RPI user here. I have everything installed correctly and it all runs awesome. I am just having one issue trying to connect my ps4 controller to retropie through Bluetooth. This isn’t your fault but I am just wondering if there is a way to update to the latest version of Retropie but not lose the multiboot ?

    Thank YOU

  28. First of all thanks for a multidreamingboot πŸ˜€

Second, has you seen DietPi? check it for a great great distro for the Pis
    regards!

  29. Hello,

I’m trying to implement the RetroPie Power Menu but, am having problems with what to do with the es_systems.cfg file. When I put it in configs/all/emulationstation then reboot I get an error on startup. All the other files are self explanatory where they go.

This is a great menu for children especially to ensure proper shutdown. I am using the latest build of RetroPie and the stock theme.

    Thanks for the help.

  30. hello,
i would like doind a triple boot with 3 choices at the start:
    – recalbox (or retropie)
    – domoticz
    – rasbian pixel

How do it different boot ?

    Thanks

  31. Greetings!

I am EXTREMELY new to the Pi scene and I am having no luck figuring out how to get RetroPie and Raspian to Dual boot. Can anyone share an easy to follow how to guide? I’d ideally like to access my RetroPie from the “desktop” (as seen in some of the videos here). Thanks in advance!

  32. Hi, on my pi3, internal wifi doesn’t work .. kodi, retropi, and raspbian, i use tripleboot.
When i connect external dongle, immediately networks shows up.
    Can anybody help me ?

  33. Hey, would love to see a triple boot for movie, gaming and music:

    * OSMC
    * Retropie
    * MoOde

Is this possible to do or do you know how i can achieve it ?

  34. Hi Steve just wanted to ask you mate I have a raspberry p3 and I was very interested in your setup. I am not very computer savvy and very limited with time. I just wanted to ask to if you would be interested in selling your image.
Please email me if your interested Thanks

    1. Hi there.

Sorry but I do not sell any of my images. I can help you through the process if needed though, its really not too hard! πŸ™‚

      Thanks.
      Steve

  35. Hey Steve,

I updated the packages inside of RetroPi and now the rasbian icon has disappeared in the menu scroller & been replaced with just the word raspbian, with a white screen.

I copied the rasbian.sh script from the original source into roms, but no change

Huge thanks for all your hard work!

  36. Hey Steve,

Your work is great and i use a dual boot image of yours. I think that you spent your free time for all of this and it’s not right to ask you to create a new image. Nevertheless I take the liberty to suggest you to replace the rasplex os, in the quad boot image, with the original plex client (plex player), that released for plex subcbribers for free the last month.

    Thank you for your work!

  37. Hi Steve,

thanks for this wonderful site. the multiboot files have been great and the instructions have been very clear. I was just wondering if you know if it would be possible to multiboot the pi with android/android tv as well?

Thanks again for the videos and multiboot files.

  38. In kodi, how do I add fusion or super repo repository on kodi with out overwriting my raspbian and retropie under programs?

  39. Hi is there and Posibility that you gab create a Multibiot with The following ?
    – Plex Media Player Embedded
    – Windows 10 IoT
    – Raspian
    – Kodi(OSMC/LibreElec/Openelec)

    ?? Would be so Great
And it Need The Script to change between os too.

  40. Hi.
Just found this site when looking for KODI/RETROPIE-dual boot, and as a bonus Raspbian so I cna make a STEAM-stream box =).

Only thing I wonder is if you are in the works of maybe doing an updated Tripple-boot w. updated versions of Kodi, Retro and Raspbian. Or is there a simple way for a novice (total noob) to download said releases and replace them into your setup-frame?

  41. i love what you are doing, the new krypton kodi is very fast even on a zero. im currently swapping memory cards between a rasplex and krypton liberelc build. id love this to be a dual boot option for the zero *hint hint nudgewink* πŸ˜€ keep up the good work its awesome.

  42. Hi! Great job you’ve done here. Just one little issue: I have my game roms in a usb pen drive. After enabling the USB ROM Service in Retropie, Raspbian.sh won’t launch. It says Permission Denied whenever I try to run it (inside emulationstation). In order to do it, I have to quit emulationstation. Any clues?

  43. Hey man!

First of all, congrats for your great work! I’m wondering how can I setup the bootloader screen, in order to select the default operating system to be loaded, time to wait etc.

Can you explain what config file should I edit (if some)?

    Regards,
    Lopes

  44. hi I would love a img of your raspbian os it look far better than the original. I would load just that from you boot system but the 7″ lcd I’m using wont work because I can put the screen res into the config file but it doesn’t boot with that so the screen wont work.

  45. Hi Steve,

your solution is perfect. I would like to have Dual-Boot RPi for my boat. The main system should be Volumio – headless controlled remotely with smartphone. Time to time would like to watch TV on Kodi (LibreELEC).

So my configuration will “Always boot to Volumio” and I need the plugin/option in Volumio to have “Boot to Kodi” option. Do you think if this is possible?

Any suggestions how to made this ?

Or maybe you can add some “music” distros like Volumio/RuneAudio/Moode to your setup?

If yes I will be more than happy to click “Donate” button.

    best regards

    Slawek

  46. Hi. i saw a great project called Moonlight which allows to use the raspberry as a steam link and stream games from pc to any screen in the local network. I wanted to know if it is possible to have Moonlight added to the quad boot project. It would be great.

  47. Thanks for an amazing job! I have tried the triple boot with Raspbian, Osmc and Retropie. It works very well.

My issue now is that I’ve tried Runeaudio and I am hooked. Atm I have these to set ups on different sd-cards but I would love a quad boot. An option would be to have two RPi3s but I don’t really wanna buy two DACs of I don’t have to.

Is there a way to get my wish come true?

  48. Hi there!
Been wanting to install this triple boot for a while now, and today i finally got around to it.

Was just wondering if there is a way to update the OS for every system or not?

    Thanks!

  49. Hello

    This is really cool builds

If possible pls include Midnight Commander (MC)
It is included in the Amibian package

Keep up the good work πŸ™‚

  50. Hi,

Love your work! It changed my life! πŸ™‚

I see you haven’t put any new builds for a while. And chance for a new one with LibreELEC 8/Kodi 17 dual boot with RetroPie?

  51. Hi i’ve been using your multiboots for my personal boxes for awhile now and am starting to sell boxes on a website soon. Would it be ok with you if I added your multiboots to my download page and link to your blog? please email me for more info.

    Thank you

  52. hey there im looking for a solution to give retropie more space on the partition using dual boot with osmc and kodi 16.1.
partitions has been set up in equal size on a 32gb sd card but for osmc i only want 2gb so i have more space for games. can anybody help? thank you so much

  53. Hey is it possible there will be a dual boot version of retropi + libreelec 8 (kodi krypton) in the near future..?
